I was sitting in the waiting room at Memorial Sloan Kettering today when I saw a woman waiting to be called in.  You could practically see the terrifying thoughts running through her head.  The fear and the stress was all over her face and I don’t think she actually “saw” anything in that waiting room.

When they called her name for the second time, she jumped up sort of startled like she had forgotten where she was.  How does anyone overcome the fear, in a situation like this?

I remember exactly what that feels like.

Sitting there waiting for my dad’s and then several months later my husband’s initial cancer diagnosis.  Before you have a plan or even any idea how bad the situation is you are forced to endure the terrifying thoughts that are running through your head.

You spend days, even weeks profoundly affected by everything.

The things you love, the things you’ve taken for granted, the things you wish you had paid more attention too…

Suddenly you realize that life is a lot shorter than you thought.

Terrifying is the only word that can honestly describe the horrible scenarios that are running through your head.  There doesn’t appear that there is anything you can do to overcome the fear and anxiety that has taken over your life.

It’s human nature, you don’t realize how precious life is until the things you love are threatened.  It sucks that the only way we seem to be able to truly appreciate things is when we are faced with a tragedy.

The fact is we do appreciate life when everything is good.

But the IMPACT is so much different when your whole world is crashing down around you.  Fear is an incredible motivator.   Because it threatens your safety and creates chaos and uncertainty.

And figuring out how to overcome the fear, is a lot more complicated than it looks.

Whenever things seem uncertain, that’s when your mind takes over and all of those paralyzing thoughts start running through your head.

In those moments it’s important to remember that YOU CAN overcome the fear …

Whatever is actually happening, it’s probably not as bad as it is in your head.  I’m not saying the situation is good, but as of right now you have survived every single disaster that has ever dropped into your world.

And you are going to survive this one too.

There is no easy answer as to how and no earth-shattering advice that’s going to make it easier to overcome the fear and crisis you are experiencing.  You just have to go through it.

And no matter what, you have to keep going.

Your loved one needs you right now, more than ever before.  Can you even imagine how this feels from the “hot seat”?

Ready or not, it’s time for you to step up and be the soldier that your loved one needs.

Here’s the deal:  Things are about to get really crazy.

And your loved one DESPERATELY needs someone to gear up and fight this battle with them.

Someone who can help them overcome the fear and survive the uncertainty that has just exploded into their world.

I know you are TERRIFIED, and you were not prepared for any of this.

You can do this.

Trust me.  I wasn’t ready either.

There is no preparation for something like this.

It’s sink or swim.

And you my darling, are damn sure going to swim.

P.S.  If you’re drowning in all this cancer business, and you have no idea where to start…  The Cancer Combat Plan is a step by step guide from someone who has struggled through this and found ways to manage the chaos, the stress and the overwhelm.
