For me personally, the ability to work from home was a HUGE asset for helping my dad battle cancer for 21 months. If I was working a traditional job when this happened, they would have had to fire me, or I would have had to quit.
I wouldn’t have been able to work 40+ hours a week and take care of my dad. I wouldn’t blame them, after all they hired me because they needed people to work the hours specified.
At the same time my family depends on my paycheck. We need that check to make it through.
So, what are the options when your family is the priority, but you need a paycheck to survive?
The answer is a flexible work from home job that you can do from anywhere.
The benefits of working from home:
There are so many huge benefits to working from home, but these are the top four from my perspective.
- I can work from literally anywhere. A hotel room, a hospital room, waiting areas and sometimes, even on my phone.
- Everything I need fits into a book bag that I can pack in less than 5 minutes.
- You can work in your Pajamas from your couch.
- You can throw in a load of laundry while you are working.
Before you jump in head first though, consider this to make sure working from home is a good fit for you…
What equipment would you need to get started working from home…
Laptop
My laptop is my life. EVERYTHING IS IN THERE! My best suggestion is to invest in a good laptop with a large amount of storage. Laptops for gaming for example, have large amounts of storage…
When your entire job is virtual, you’ll need a ton of space, so you can do everything you need to do and keep everything organized.
Reliable Internet
If this is going to become your permanent gig, you have to have Internet you can count on. Spotty internet can break you.
Working from home is just like any other job…there are deadlines, emergencies and all the normal stress factors that come with a regular job. But, you get to respond to them in your PJ’s on the couch!
Security Software
I love Avast. It has a ton of protection options and has worked really well for me. Their prices are pretty decent too.
Invest in a VPN
The ability to “work from anywhere” lies in your ability to keep everything secure. A VPN will help you do that. It provides you with a secure network while using a public internet.
So, for example, I work in hospitals a lot. In waiting rooms, sometimes in hospital rooms or in hotel rooms when we stay in the City. A VPN allows me to connect to the public internet BUT remain private so that you can access email, PayPal or anything else you wish to keep private.
That’s it.
Make a plan….
Ready to get started working from home?
The key here is not going off the deep end, quitting your job and hoping it works out!
True fact… that method rarely works.
There are a TON of legit jobs out there that allow you to get started working from home. You just need to find the right one for you. And you need to do it just like you would any other job…
- Make sure you have the skills you need for the job
- Complete application/resume
- Interview
Things to consider to get started working from home…
- How much money do you need to make per month?
- What do you do for work now, or what have you done in the past?
- What are your strengths? Weaknesses?
- What skills do you have from previous or current jobs?
For example: maybe you have previously worked in a nursing home where people have yelled at you frequently and even attempted to hit you? You’re probably going to have the skill set to deal with and reassure an angry customer.
- What kind of schedule would you need to work?
- Will you need additional training?
- Do you need medical Insurance?
- Are you starting your own business?
- What would you need to do to make this happen?
