How to Find Faith and Resilience During Cancer.

I was sitting in the waiting room at Memorial Sloan Kettering when my eyes landed on a woman waiting to be called in.  She looked anxious and scared and I don’t think she actually “saw” anything in that room.

You could practically see the terrifying thoughts running through her head.

When they called her name for the second time, she jumped.  She seemed  startled, like she had forgotten where she was.  This whole scenario broke my heart.

I remember exactly what that feels like.

Anxiously waiting for my dad’s initial diagnosis. Then several months later, my husband’s, and after that, my mother’s.  Before you have any kind of plan, or knowledge about cancer treatment or even a clear idea of how bad the situation is.

The most terrifying thoughts are running through your head.

Just so you know… If you’re drowning in the overwhelm of a diagnosis of cancer, we can help you SIMPLIFY the complicated issues that come with cancer.

  • Finding the best care
  • Talking with your insurance company
  • Finding resources that will actually help
  • Dealing with the fear, anxiety, and overwhelm of this whole situation.

Cancer Affects Everything

A cancer diagnosis changes everything.  It deeply affects the way you feel about your whole life.

The things you love, the things you’ve taken for granted, the things you wish you had paid more attention to…

Suddenly you realize that life is a lot shorter than you thought.

It’s not that you didn’t know that, it’s just that a cancer diagnosis drives that point home like a punch in the face.

Terrifying is the only word that can honestly describe the horrible scenarios that are running through your head during a cancer battle.  And it seriously feels like there is nothing you can do to ease the fear and anxiety that takes over your life when cancer drops in.

We don’t realize how precious life is until the things we love are threatened.  It sucks that the only way we’re able to truly appreciate things is when we are faced with a tragedy.

The fact is we do appreciate life during the good times.

But the IMPACT is so much different when you’re having a tough time and the whole world is crashing down around you.

Fear is an incredible motivator. Because it threatens your safety and creates chaos and uncertainty.

And figuring out how to overcome the fear and find your spiritual strength, is a lot more complicated than it looks.

You Can’t Control Any of This

When life is uncertain, that’s when your mind takes over and all of those paralyzing thoughts start running through your head.

My dad used to say, “I don’t want to know too much about what’s going to happen.  I don’t need or want excruciating details about any of this.”

“The doctors know what they’re doing.  I’m just gonna put my faith in God and in the doctors and trust that whatever’s supposed to happen is what’s going to happen.”

The truth is this cancer business is heavy stuff.

My dad knew the secret that a lot of people (ME!) struggle with.

We can’t control any of this.  And making ourselves sick worrying about it won’t change anything.

Anxiety doesn’t fix the problem, offer any type of solution, or help you gear up for what’s coming.

It simply invades your mind and steals any happiness from this day, this week, this moment.

We waste a lot of time worrying about things we have no control over.  We give time and precious moments to our fears that we will never get back.

You’ll never experience today again.

I’ve wasted so many days worried and anxious about what a difficult time I’m having and things that are completely out of my control.

And I’ve struggled tremendously with letting go of this stuff. A massive part of cancer is tending to your emotional needs.

Faith Over Fear

Thankfully, I found something incredible that has helped me unload some of this stuff and put my religious faith and my trust solely where it needs to be.  Onto the shoulders of the only One who can control any of this and give me the ever-present help I need.

I Choose Trust is a self paced bible study that helps you work through some of this anxiety and give your fears to God.

Really give them to God.  Not just say you’re gonna.  🙂

I’m the girl who has believed in God for as long as I can remember.  But giving Him my worries and struggles?   Applying the practice of faith to my life and giving him my fear?

Trust me, I try, but it’s something I’ve failed at time and time again! Sometimes it’s easier to deal with the spiritual distress than to actually fix it.

Packed full of lessons, scriptures, prayers and assignments, you’re not just reading another book about religious beliefs.  You’re doing the work, every day.

This is a deep dive into what you’re feeling, what you’re struggling with and how to let it go.

And it’s spending time with God.  Real time getting to know him better which has become the highlight of my day.

Coping with the Stress

The question you need to ask yourself is “how can I cope with the stress and anxiety that come with these challenges?” (so you can deal with anything life throws at you).

The answer is God.

Starting to learn HOW to give my fears and anxiety to Him has had a huge impact on my entire life.

Would you rather live struggling through the anxiety of every situation that comes flying at you?  Missing days of your life worried and scared when you find yourself in a scenario that you’re just not meant to control?

I Choose Trust helps me put a lot of this stuff into perspective.  Consider this your spiritual support because it teaches me how to (really) give my fear and anxiety to God.  And how to keep it there.

My relationship with God is so much stronger.  I’m learning what he expects from me, what my purpose is and how I can truly put my faith in Him and let some of this stuff go. It helps with all of my spiritual needs.

Not only am I building a better relationship with Him, but I’m starting to feel the weight of the stress and anxiety of life being lifted.  I’m practicing faith over fear, in my real life and not just talking about it.

Things feel much different when you’re not carrying around a ton of extra baggage.

How Cancer and Caregiving Factor In

Especially in a cancer situation.  Whether you have cancer, or someone you love does… You have found yourself in one of the most significant challenges you will EVER encounter.

I know what it feels like to try to manage and control all of this stuff.  To be exhausted all day long and when it’s finally time to sleep you’re wide awake because the fear and your anxiety are running through your head.

Forget about that right now and tell me.

  • Do you have control over this?
  • Do you have any idea what’s going to happen and how you’re going to manage it?
  •  Have you been blindsided by any part of this journey?

Wouldn’t it feel incredible to be free of the stress and the pressure you’re feeling to “get this under control” rather than letting things unfold the way God intended? And to let him guide you every step of the way.

That doesn’t mean you don’t have to do the work.  This situation is unbelievably intense and it’s amplified greatly by the extra stress and anxiety you’re carrying around with you.

Applying faith takes practice and purpose. One day you’re doing great, and the next day you’re falling apart.

It’s time to learn how to let some of this go.

Here’s the spiritual support you need.

FAQ

And in case you’re on the fence, let me clarify a few of the most frequently asked questions we get asked all the time…

“I’m a full-time caregiver.  I don’t have the time or the energy for this.”

I get it. I’m a caregiver to 3 family members right now. And, I’ve struggled with this for over 2 years in the middle of a cancer journey when my world was literally crumbling.

What I found was that my energy got better when I was able to get some of this “stuff” off my chest.

  • Start with one assignment a day.
  •  And if you can’t commit to that, do 15 minutes a day.
  • Set a timer, work through as much as you can, and pick back up tomorrow.

The only thing standing in the way of you unloading some of this stress is 15 minutes.

Your health and your sanity is worth it.

And at the end of the day this will give you more energy because you’ll start shedding some of the stress, the worry, and the things you can’t control…  and finally put them in their rightful place.

Try it for a week (every day) and tell me how it went.

“ I would love to do this, but I just can’t make this a priority right now.”

This doesn’t have to be THE PRIORITY, but it has to be important.  God put you in the situation you’re in for a reason and this will help you sort some of that out.

And no matter what your situation is… learning to ask God for help and to give him the stress that you can’t control is going to help you bring back that peace of mind that you’ve been struggling with for a while now.

Wouldn’t your life be better, be different right now if you could alleviate some of the terrifying thoughts that occupy your mind constantly?  Wouldn’t your life be better if you could learn to apply faith to your everyday life?

Trust me this is a quality of life issue, this is as important as your loved ones’ cancer care. You need this.
